Here at Little Moose, we've always got our eyes peeled and notepads open in case inspiration strikes. Our Sloth collection of cute and quirky jewellery is a great example of an idea, almost literally, falling out of a tree in front of you!
Nature has always been a big source of inspiration for our playful jewellery and quirky accessories, the wonders of the animal kingdom are close to our heart, and whenever we can, we immerse ourselves in it - be it an issue of Nat Geo, a David Attenborough marathon or, occasionally, trips to the far flung corners of the world. Read on to discover how a trip to Costa Rica made us fall in love with sloths and shape one of our most popular collections.
Our Sloth Family necklace and Dangling Sloth earrings
In 2010 we were lucky enough to visit Costa Rica - a magical country with areas of incredible natural beauty and unspoilt rainforest (and boy, does it rain a lot in the rainforest). From pumas and agouti's, to spider monkeys and being surrounded by hummingbirds it was an amazing adventure - but there was one part of it that we couldn't bear to leave behind.
We were lucky enough to visit an incredible woman named Carol who, in 2003, opened the Osa Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary takes in orphaned and injured wildlife (with the hope of releasing them back into the wild) of all shapes and sizes from kinkajou's and ocelots to macaws and toucans. An orphaned spider monkey named Sweetie greeted us on the beach of the isolated 700 acre reserve.

A baby sloth at the Osa Sanctuary.
It was an honour to be taken around the reserve by Carol herself, who met us with a red sling across her chest, the contents of which we would soon discover to be a tiny baby three toed sloth whose mother had sadly been killed. If you thought regular sized sloths were cute, you can't even begin to imagine how adorable this little critter looked.
Our Sloth Family necklace was inspired by a trip to a nature reserve in Costa Rica
The odds of an orphaned baby sloth surviving are incredibly low, and to stand any chance they simply have to be kept close to a surrogate mum. Carol had been carrying this little fellow around with her ever since it was brought to the sanctuary. This tiny little thing was completely and utterly helpless without the heartwarming love and care from Carol.
Needless to say, our visit to Costa Rica, and in particular the Osa Wildlife Sanctuary meant we simply had to create a Sloth collection of jewellery - it may have taken us a few years, but you never forget an idea or experience like that.
We even added a cute little Baby Sloth necklace to our collection too, we call him/her, Osa.
